A few years ago while visiting Prague over the winter I first tried mulled wine. Many of their cafes serve it and it was a great drink to enjoy on a chilly winters night after exploring. Now at home on a cold winters night mulled wine is one of my favourite drinks to sip on.

Here is my favourite recipe!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 (750 ml) bottle of dry red wine

  • 1 orange or apple sliced into rounds

    • you can peel the orange for a less bitter drink

    • if you use apple it soaks up the wine and tastes delicious!

    • I usually use a combination of both fruits

  • 2-4 table spoons maple syrup

    • can substitute with sugar or honey

  • 1/4 cup brandy

  • Mix of spices

    • 8 whole cloves

    • 2 cinnamon sticks (I ran out of sticks you can also use ground cinnamon)

    • 2 star anise

    • pinch of nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Combine ingredients (red wine, brandy, maple syrup, orange slices and spices) in a saucepan

  • Simmer the ingredients. Start on medium to hight heat until the ingredients barely reach a simmer. Turn the heat to low and let is simmer for 15 min to 3 hours.

    • Do not let the mixture boil. You will boil off the alcohol!

    • The longer it simmers for the richer the

  • Use a fine mesh strainer to remove the orange slices and spices.

  • If needed you can add more of the sweetener you used

  • Serve warm in a heatproof mug

  • Garnish with fruit slices and spices as desired
